Canon EOS
(Electro Optical System) cameras were first introduced into the market in 1987 and the EOS auto focus system
is a standard that Canon follows in making SLR cameras even today.
These cameras incorporate the new EF lens mount replacing the
older FD lens mount. This new mount has only an electrical linkage between the camera body and the lens. The motor
for aperture control and focusing is mounted in the body of the lens itself. In the FD lens mount-technology the
camera body controlled the shutter speed as well as the aperture setting.
The Canon EOS camera series is so popular that Canon has
released over 40 models with EOS-technology. EOS 650 was the first film based model released in 1987 and the more
recent one is named EOS Rebel T2. Same models aredesignated differently in different parts
of the world. The EOS series also has a manual focus model called EOS EF-M in which the exposure is both auto
and manual but the focus is only manual.
The flash system in Canon EOS
cameras use through the lens (TTL) flash metering and its variants and has undergone a no. of improvements since
its first introduction. They use infrared pre flashes to accurately judge the subject
distance.
Canon EOS camera features
the maximum no. of auto focus points (up to 45) compared to its competitors which result in sharp images of fast
moving objects. EOS cameras also have eye controlled focusing in which the camera tries to track the eye ball
movement of the subject once inside the view finder.
Other important feature of Canon EOS camera includes an
ergonomic quick control dial for functions like setting of aperture, exposure compensation etc. which makes it easy
for the photographer to vary the settings with the forefinger while viewing the subject through the view
finder.
It also has 12 shooting modes including 7 programmed shooting modes that can handle a
variety of situations like close up, portrait, landscape, night scene etc. Some of the recent EOS models have a
large LCD panel at the back that displays camera settings in an easy to read manner.
They also have safety shutter-release lock that prevents from
shooting if there is no film or if no lens is attached. Another interesting feature is that the camera gives a
warning sound when there is a shake of the camera while taking pictures with slow shutter
speeds.
The Canon EOS digital camera range incorporates digital technology for capturing the images instead of films. They
have up to 10.1 mega pixel CMOS (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor) sensors and DIGIC image
processor.
The latter has the capacity to process high definition images
on a single chip in double quick time. They have 2.5” large LCD panel for viewing and up to 3 frames per second
shooting speed. They also have direct printing facility and high speed transfer of images through USB port to a
computer.
Thus the Canon EOS camera, both the film and the digital
variety, is loaded with features that enable even an amateur photographer to take high quality
pictures.
